On the free online language learning platform Duolingo, the Ukrainian language became the biggest learning trend in 2022.

According to the platform, after Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, more than 1.3 million people in the world started learning the Ukrainian language.

“Some of the most common reasons why people learn a language are study, work, travel, and there is a growing number of people who are interested in learning a culture. But this year we saw a new reason: solidarity,” Duolingo writes in its annual report, based on data from more than 500 million of its students.

Interest in learning the Ukrainian language increased in the first weeks after the start of the war, peaked at the end of March and remains stable until the end of 2022.

In Germany, the Ukrainian language rose from 36th place in terms of popularity to 15th in 2021, in Great Britain it jumped from 37th to 17th place, and in the USA – from 36th to 22nd.

The Ukrainian language is also actively taught in Ireland (2229% increase) and the Netherlands (1590%).

Ukrainians themselves are more actively learning the German language on the platform.
